JCI Nigeria, Let’s Do it! World, ACT Foundation campaign for a clean, waste-free Nigeria

The increasing rate of environmental degradation, climate change, flooding and diseases can be traced to society’s attitude towards waste and trash management, just as government’s huge spendings to address wastes issues have proved unsuccessful.

The increasing rate of environmental degradation, climate change, flooding and diseases can be traced to society’s attitude towards waste and trash management, just as government’s huge spendings to address wastes issues have proved unsuccessful.

However, JCI Nigeria, as a concerned body has aligned itself with the goals of the Let’s Do it! World and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with the backing of ACT Foundation to organize a campaign against indiscriminate refuse dumping and implementation of efficient waste management.

The project will climax on September 15, which has been designated as World Cleanup Day, where Nigeria will join over 150 other countries and 20 million citizens around the globe to organize a national cleanup.

“Our Let’s Do it Campaign is a wake-up call for everyone. It is an opportunity to explore how young people can take action towards making our environment better. The collaboration between JCI Nigeria and ACT Foundation presents a rare opportunity to unite all sectors of society to fight against illegal waste disposal and create sustainable impact,” says Adeniyi Balogun, 2018 National President, JCI Nigeria

World Cleanup Day is civic action driven by determined people and powered by technology. During the lead-up to September 15, the global community is using technology to map the locations, amounts, and types of waste that needs to be cleaned up and managed. The World Cleanup app enables anyone to quickly map the waste in their neighbourhood, creating valuable data for cleanup organizers and visualizing the mismanaged waste problem on both local and global level. The app also lets users create a cleanup event in a certain area for 15 September, making them responsible for preparing and executing the specific event including finding the best way to manage the collected waste. The challenge of taking care of the collected waste on 15 September is huge, particularly in places without a waste management system in place.

As part of its commitment to promoting environmental wellbeing and sustaining impact in communities across Africa, ACT Foundation is supporting organizations like JCI Nigeria through the Let’s Do It! Campaign geared towards creating innovative solutions to daunting environmental challenges.

“Part of our goal is to achieve a circular economy, trillions of wealth can be generated for the global economy by 2025 and 100,000 new jobs can be created within the next five years if companies and individuals focused on building circular supply chains to increase the rate of recycling, reuse and remanufacture. The world Cleanup Day will demonstrate how active citizens within local communities can unite all sectors of society and citizens for global sustainable impact,” says Gafar Olorunleke Odubote, the National Director for JCI Nigeria Let’s do it! Campaign and World Cleanup Day representative in Nigeria.
