Jigawa flood claims 92 lives, 57,661 households displaced

• NEMA, SEMA, others send relief materials
No fewer than 92 persons have lost their lives to the recent flood that ravaged parts of Jigawa State, leaving 57,661 households displaced, says the State Emergency Relief Agency (SEMA).

The report, compiled by the Director Operations’ office, noted that the flood, which lasted for one month, affected 110,189 persons from almost all the state’s 27 local councils.

Most of the displaced persons have been housed in 25 Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in different parts of the state, where SEMA, assisted by philanthropists, take care of them, The Guardian gathered.

The relief materials from the Federal Government through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) consist mainly of foodstuff, house utensils and building materials.

They comprise 15,650x10kg bags of rice, 2,750x10kg bags of beans, 12,550x10kg bags of maize and 1,750×20 litres of vegetable oil.

Others are 1,170 cartons of seasoning cubes, 400 cartons of tomato paste, 24,900 mats, 6,500 mosquito nets and clothing.

The victims also got 700 mattresses, 8,900 blankets, 125 bags of cooking salt, 7,500 bags of cement and 5,600 bundles of roofing sheets.

Among the affected council are Jahun, Miga, Guri, Auyo, Taura, Ringim, Kafin Hausa, Birniwa and Malam-Madori.
