Judges and energy experts will tomorrow discuss flexibility for addressing inherent challenges in power sector recovery programme at the fourth annual Judges workshop on Nigerian gas and power.

The recovery programme, launched last year comprises of policies and actions aimed at creating a viable privately run power sector.

Organisers of the programme, International Institute for Petroleum, Energy Law and Policy (IIPELP) and the National Judicial Institute (NJI) said the workshop, scheduled to hold on Tuesday and Wednesday next week would specifically focus on the legal, commercial and regulatory Issues in the recovery programme.

The group said in a statement yesterday that the platform would offer senior Justices, Judges of the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and the Federal High Court opportunity to stay abreast with the extant position of the law and practice on matters relating to petroleum, gas and power sector law and policy.

Founder and President of IIPELP, Niyi Ayoola-Daniels said: “The focus of the Workshop is to arm senior Justices / Judges of the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and the Federal High Court with appropriate legal, commercial and regulatory issues in the Nigerian power sector recovery programme.

“The Workshop will also examine the recent power policy decisions by the office of the Vice President of Nigeria, Central Bank of Nigeria, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Bureau of Public Enterprises, Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company, Nigeria Electricity Liability Management Company, Niger Delta Power Holding Company, Rural Electrification Agency, Transmission Company of Nigeria, Nigeria Electricity Market Stabilization Facility, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Nigerian Gas Company and other.”

According to him, the keynote address at the workshop will be delivered by the Chief Justice Of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.
Ayoola-Daniels noted that the forum would to build capacity for the Judges and other workshop participants.

Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Alfa Belgore, President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Adamu Bulkachuwa, Acting Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Abdul Kafarati, Attorney General of the Federation & Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, Minister of Power, Works and Housing Babatunde Raji Fashola, Minister of State for Petroleum Ibe Kachikwu, GMD NNPC Maikanti Baru, CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele, Executive Chairman NERC Prof. James Momoh and other distinguished guests are expected at the forum.
