Kaduna assembly swears in deputy as speaker resigns
The Kaduna State House of Assembly yesterday elected a new Speaker, Yusuf Ibrahim Zailani following the resignation of the former Speaker, Aminu Abdullahi Shagali.
Shagali had presented a hand-written resignation letter addressed to Clerk of the House, Bello Zubairu, detailing the reasons for his decision to resign, but Clerk of the House said he (Shagali) resigned on personal grounds.
The House also elected Muktar Isa Hazo as the new Deputy Speaker.
Meanwhile, sources said Shagali’s resignation might not be unconnected with the overriding influence of the state executive, especially as was said to have fallen out with the powers that supported his emergence as Speaker. The Guardian also learnt that even as the reasons for the development remained sketchy, Shagali’s resignation came amid alleged plans by some members of the assembly to impeach him.
Shagali, who was one of the youngest House of Assembly speakers in the country, represents Sabon Gari constituency in Kaduna State.
