Kaduna CP cracks down on illegal arms

Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Umar Muri, has ordered commanders, divisional police officers and heads of tactical/operation units under his command to arrest and prosecute individuals that possess firearms unlawfully.

In a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Mohammad Jalige, the CP said the order became imperative following the recent directive from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, against the proliferation of prohibited firearms in the country.

Jalige said the CP, who ordered the strict enforcement of the directive in Kaduna, also warned persons and/or groups in possession of prohibited firearms to submit them to the nearest police station, as defaulters would not be spared.

According to him, the police boss directed all area commanders, DPOs, heads of tactical/operation units of the command to immediately emplace measures to identify, isolate, disarm, arrest and prosecute any person(s) or group(s) unlawfully possessing firearms, particularly those prohibited.

“The CP further directs all DPOs to, with immediate effect, organise enlightenment meetings for personnel of Neighbourhood Watch, Vigilante and local security outfits within their areas of responsibility to ensure they operate in conformity with extant laws guiding their establishment and operations. On their part, area commanders are to coordinate, supervise and report outcomes of the meetings.”

“To this end, residents of the state have been enjoined to remain law-abiding, vigilant and promptly report any persons or groups found to be unlawfully possessing firearms, especially prohibited ones, to the nearest police station,” he added.
