The atmosphere at the 2023 Dratech International Conference was electric as technology and finance leaders from across Africa gathered to celebrate the continent’s most groundbreaking innovators. When the spotlight turned to the Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence Innovation Award, all eyes were on Adebayo Kalejaiye, whose name was met with a standing ovation. His recognition marked a defining moment for Africa’s financial sector, showcasing how artificial intelligence and resilient cybersecurity strategies are transforming trust in digital systems.
Kalejaiye, widely regarded as one of Africa’s leading cybersecurity experts, has followed an extraordinary journey into technology. Graduating in the top five per cent of his class with a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Lagos, he quickly translated analytical rigor into pioneering cybersecurity solutions. His globally recognised certifications, including ISO 27032 Lead Cybersecurity Manager and ISO 27035 Lead Incident Manager, underscore his technical expertise, but it is his ability to create solutions with real-world impact that sets him apart.
In his role as Senior Cybersecurity Engineer at United Bank for Africa, Kalejaiye developed a security policy that spanned 20 countries, reducing the bank’s cyber-attack surface by 95 per cent and protecting over ten million dollars in potential breaches. He integrated AI-powered threat intelligence and predictive analytics into the bank’s systems, enabling his team to anticipate and neutralise threats before they could materialise. His leadership extended beyond technology, as multilingual awareness campaigns he directed improved institutional readiness by 80 per cent, ensuring staff across borders were prepared for evolving cyber risks.
Reflecting on his approach, Kalejaiye said, “Cybersecurity is not just about technology. It is about protecting livelihoods, economies, and futures. Every system we secure is a commitment to the people who rely on it.”
Kalejaiye’s achievements at United Bank for Africa were built on earlier successes at First City Monument Bank, where he designed a real-time monitoring system that reduced intrusion incidents by 80 per cent and strengthened compliance, boosting digital adoption across West Africa. At Access Bank PLC, he oversaw a $10m Data Loss Prevention initiative that improved security by 70 per cent while maintaining trust among more than fifty-two million customers.
When asked about the importance of AI in security, Kalejaiye stressed, “Artificial intelligence gives us the foresight to anticipate threats before they occur, but technology alone is not enough. It must be guided by sound policy and a deep understanding of the people who interact with these systems.” His leadership combines technical precision with human insight, creating cybersecurity frameworks that are both adaptive and practical.
The Dratech committee recognised Kalejaiye not only for his technical innovation but also for his ability to scale solutions across multiple countries and deliver measurable results that set new industry benchmarks. Colleagues describe him as a leader who anticipates challenges and designs solutions that others might overlook. “My goal is to leave every system stronger than I found it,” Kalejaiye said. “Every innovation we implement must make a lasting difference and inspire trust in the digital economy.”
The Dratech Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence Innovation Award is one of the most competitive on the continent, drawing top contenders from Africa’s tech ecosystem. In 2023, Kalejaiye emerged as a standout, not only for his past achievements but for the promise of continued innovation. His work has already reshaped the way African banks approach security, and with cyber threats evolving daily, his mission is far from over. By earning this recognition, Adebayo Kalejaiye has solidified his place among Africa’s leading innovators, demonstrating that visionary leadership, technical excellence, and a commitment to ethical practice can shape the future of digital security across the continent.
