About 300 rape cases were recorded in Katsina State in the last year, with most of the victims being three to 14-year-olds, a police official has said.

This is even as cases of rape are reported from 34 councils daily. At a Women’s Summit yesterday in the state capital, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Gambo Isah, lamented that the state recorded over 287 rape cases in 2020.

The summit, themed ‘The Way Out To Rising Rape Cases in Katsina State’, was organised by the state’s Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, in collaboration with a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Al-Ummah Support Initiative.

Isah, who was one of the speakers at the event, also said that 22 sodomy cases were recorded in the same year.

According to him, of the 287 rape cases, 236 are under investigation, and most of the victims are between three and 14 years. Isah, however, said that lack of cooperation from parents to pursue cases of rape in courts was not helping justice delivery.

“The attitude of some parents in not wanting to pursue rape cases in court provides opportunity for rapist to escape punishment. This should not be so, as we need the cooperation of parents to provide detailed information to police, to pursue rape cases in our courts,” he said.

But Special Adviser to the Governor on Girl Child Education and Development, Mrs. Amina Lawal, said her department “receives cases of rape from the 34 councils daily.”

Lawal canvassed capital punishment for rapists in the country, to save potential victims and serve as deterrent to would-be rapists.
She, however, said that her department had employed the services of competent lawyers to pursue cases of rape at various courts, to minimise the problem in the state.
