Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba state, has signed three Executive Orders aimed at addressing security, social and environmental challenges in the state.

The Executive Orders, signed over the weekend, cover the prohibition of drug abuse, political thuggery, and environmental degradation, as well as the protection of host communities.

The order on drug abuse seeks to strengthen the enforcement of existing laws prohibiting the abuse of illicit drugs and controlled substances. According to the state government, the decision followed growing concerns over the increasing rate of substance abuse and its link to criminality, violence and social disintegration.

The government noted that drug abuse has become a major threat to the future of young people, contributing to insecurity, family breakdown, reduced productivity and other forms of crime.

It said the Executive Order provides stronger legal backing for relevant authorities to prevent, monitor and prosecute drug-related offences while supporting public enlightenment campaigns, rehabilitation programmes and youth development initiatives.

Governor Kefas also signed an Executive Order banning political thuggery, describing the measure as a proactive step to sustain the peace and stability currently enjoyed in Taraba State ahead of the next election cycle.

The order prohibits the recruitment, sponsorship, financing, harbouring or use of political thugs by individuals, groups or political interests. It is intended to curb violence, intimidation, destruction of property and other unlawful acts commonly associated with elections.

The third Executive Order, as 9vserved by The Guardian, focuses on curbing environmental degradation and protecting communities affected by the illegal exploitation of natural resources.

The government expressed concern over the activities of illegal miners, loggers and other unauthorised operators, saying their actions have led to the destruction of farmlands and water sources while threatening the safety and livelihoods of host communities.

According to the government, the order strengthens measures against illegal exploitation of natural resources, promotes environmental sustainability and safeguards the rights and welfare of communities hosting legitimate resource development activities.

The state government called on citizens, traditional institutions, religious leaders, youth groups, political stakeholders, civil society organisations and security agencies to support the implementation of the Executive Orders in the interest of peace, security and sustainable development.
