Lagos warns against sharing child pornography, threatens 14-year jail term
The Lagos State government has warned that anyone caught sharing or forwarding child pornography or obscene content involving children on social media faces up to 14 years imprisonment, as stipulated in the state’s domestic and sexual violence law.
Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, Mrs Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, issued the warning yesterday during a workshop for head teachers, teachers, social workers, and school counsellors in Lagos.
Vivour-Adeniyi noted that the act of forwarding child pornography is a criminal offence under the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Law.
“Child pornography and obscene publications are not just unethical but criminal. We aim to raise awareness among participants and discourage the circulation of such materials, particularly on social media. Pornography negatively impacts cognitive behaviour, and it is vital to protect children from such harmful exposure,” she said.
She highlighted the state government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the capacity of stakeholders to safeguard children’s rights and ensure their protection.
“The workshop is part of our commitment to equipping school counsellors, social workers, and head teachers with the knowledge to create safe environments for children. These professionals play a critical role in protecting children and educating them about their rights,” Vivour-Adeniyi added.
