Lawmakers seek Police, military deployment in Nasarawa over killings

Nasarawa State House of Assembly, yesterday, urged security agencies in the state to as a matter of urgency deploy their men to Mararaba Udege, Nasarawa Local Council to stop incessant killings in the area.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau, made the call after Hon. Onarigu Onah Kana, member representing Udege/Loko Constituency brought the matter under Matters of Public Interest during the House proceedings in Lafia.

Jatau lamented on how people of the same tribe created by God are killing themselves because of worldly things, and called for an end to the killings in the interest of development.

According to him, security agencies should mobilise their men and officers to Mararaba Udege immediately to stop the ongoing killings.

“We also want to urge Gov. Abdullahi Sule to liase with Military Authorities to have a military base in Mararaba Udege to end the crisis and for peace to reign.

“The Bible and Quran condemns killings of human beings. Killing one another is a sin.

“As Life is very precious, whether we like it or not, we must live together as God did not make a mistake to create us together.“These are people that are of the same (one) tribe. They have to embrace unity and peace,” he said.

The Speaker commended Gov. Abdullahi Sule for his efforts in promoting peace and security in the state. He urged the people of the area to let their differences go and tolerate one another irrespective of their affiliations.

On his part, Hon. Onarigu Onah Kana, member representing Udege/ Loko Constituency, lamented on how the people of Afo in Mararaba Udege are killing themselves.

He said that every day and night, there are killings of innocent people and destruction of properties in the area. He called on the Speaker and Honourable members to support his motion to stop killings in his constituency.

The lawmaker also appreciated Gov. Abdullahi Sule for his positive intervention to end the crisis through security measures and provision of relief materials.

Contributing, Hon. Solomon Akwashiki, Rt. Hon. Abel Yakubu Bala and Hon. Abdullahi Ibrahim Sa’ad, all lamented over the unfortunate situation in the area.
They lamented on how people of the same tribe instead of living in unity and peace with each other are taking arms against each other.

They also sympathised with the Afo nation while calling on security agencies to be alive in their responsibility of protecting lives and properties. It was gathered that the crisis in Mararaba Udege originated December last year between Eben and Angazo people of Afo tribe and has escalated to Eki and Ambu clans living over 40 people dead.
