The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, (LCCI) has charged the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode to continue in the steps of his predecessor, Babatunde Fashola, especially in the drive to make the state a destination for investments.

The LCCI said it would extend its hands of fellowship for “constructive dialogue and engagement on all issues affecting the economy of the state and in particular private sector development.”

In a statement, at the weekend, signed by the President, LCCI, Remi Bello, the chamber urged the new administration to “strengthen the framework for traffic management and the development of road capacity in the light of the unbearable traffic congestion experienced in the state, especially at peak traffic periods.”

LCCI said that the state offers opportunities for businesses to thrive, but that the cost of doing business must be addressed sincerely to allow the private sector to help the government in the delivery of its mandate especially in the area of job creation and revenue generation.

It said, for instance, that the government needed to take critical steps to address the cost of land, the perfection of land titles and the procurement of certificate of occupancy.

“We urge the new administration to look critically at ways in which the cost of land and the cost of perfection of land titles and the duration of procurement of the certificate of occupancy can be reduced

“It is our view that the creation of an enabling environment for businesses (particularly SMEs) is perhaps the most potent way to deal with the problem of unemployment. This will guarantee the creation of sustainable jobs. It may therefore not be necessary to create a new ministry as being contemplated, especially in the light of the depressed fiscal outlook facing all levels of government at this time and the need to reduce the cost of governance,” it said.
