Lead the change you desire, group tells youths
Youths have been charged to lead the change they desire by seizing opportunities before them and creating job opportunities rather than seeking one.
The charge was given during a youth mentoring/empowerment seminar organised by Human Rights and Empowerment Project Ltd/GTE (HREP) themed ‘New Orientation for Self-development and Service to the Nation’.
Speaking at the event, which took place at the City Mall, Onikan, Lagos, the Executive Director of HREP, Gozie Moneke, said the seminar aimed at building a critical mass of Nigerian youths that would transform the country, which is in dire need of a new breed of progressive, honest and patriotic leaders.
Moneke urged the youths to be determined and hardworking, stating that tough people outlast tough times.
He said: “By sheer exercise of will and self-discipline, begin to develop and sharpen your abilities, and creatively deploy them to maximum advantage not just for your individual benefit but for the service of the country.
“Effective service and success in any legitimate endeavour would be impossible without competence and capacity, hence the need for constant capacity building and self-development.”
For the founder of Centre for Values in Leadership (CVL), Prof. Pat Utomi, cooperation is essential for social development.
Capitalism does not define cooperation, as it encourages pursuant of self-interest and competition, said the professor of political economy.
Utomi lamented: “In Nigeria, we are busy killing one another, thus not moving forward. It is easy to assume self-interest, but the end is detrimental to the nation.
“Development will begin when thoughts of Nigerians are for the country rather than for personal gain.”
Meanwhile, an education expert, Prof. Joy Eyisi, said quality education and good reading culture were the tools for success.
She noted education as the key to development and its quality the determinant of growth.
Also speaking, founder of Development Dynamics, Dr. Jude Ohanele, described a leader as one who creates more leaders than followers gathered.
