The Labour Party(LP) has congratulated the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, on winning the 2026 Arthur Svensson International Prize, describing the honour as a landmark recognition of his decades-long struggle for workers’ rights, social justice and democratic freedoms.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, the party said Ajaero’s conferment with the prestigious international award in Oslo, Norway, was not only a personal achievement but also a proud moment for Nigeria’s labour movement.
The party noted that the recognition underscored the enduring relationship between the Labour Party and the organised labour movement, describing both as constitutional, historical and ideological partners in the pursuit of equity, justice and workers’ welfare.
According to the statement, Ajaero’s emergence as the first Nigerian labour leader to receive the Arthur Svensson International Prize reflects his outstanding contributions to the defence of workers’ rights and democratic values over more than three decades.
The Labour Party praised his consistent opposition to policies it described as anti-people, his advocacy for fair wages and improved welfare, and his commitment to protecting democratic space despite mounting challenges.
It expressed confidence that the international honour would further inspire the NLC president to continue championing the interests of Nigerian workers and advancing the broader cause of social and economic justice.
The party congratulated Ajaero on what it described as a historic achievement and wished him greater success in his continued service to the labour movement and the nation.
