Following a one-day industrial action embarked by its pilots over alleged pay dispute, the management of Lufthansa Airlines is cancelling no fewer than 876 flights to and from several countries, including Nigeria.

Passengers from Lagos and Abuja were contacted yesterday not to expect their flights at 10:00 pm. today due to the development. The airline’s media officer in Nigeria, Hakeem Jimoh, told The Guardian that the affected passengers had been rescheduled for future flights, while other emergent cases would be taken care of ahead of resumption of normal operations tomorrow.

The 876 cancellations, out of about 3,000 scheduled flights for the day, affect about 100,000 passengers.Jimoh said passengers that flew from Lagos and Abuja last night to Frankfurt, Germany would be rebooked to their next destinations, since they would be arriving in the midst of the strike.

The action, the 14th to hit the airline in its dispute with the Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) union, runs from midnight and affects short and long haul flights departing from German airports.

Flights by Lufthansa’s other airlines, including Germanwings, Eurowings, Austrian Airlines, SWISS and Brussels Airlines were not affected by the strike, management clarified.

However, budget airline Eurowings canceled more than 60 flights yesterday due to a separate strike by some cabin crew in a pay dispute between management with the Verdi labour union. The walkout started at Duessseldorf and Hamburg airports at 5:00 a.m. local time (0400 GMT) and is due to last until 8:00 pm.
