Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has cautioned against what he described as the misuse of his name for political campaigns ahead of the 2027 governorship election, insisting that he is not the person seeking to become the state’s next governor.

Makinde issued the warning in response to comments by Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, distancing himself from political activities in which his name was allegedly being used to promote a particular governorship ambition.

The governor, who appeared displeased by the development, urged those involved to stop associating him with campaigns or statements that could create the impression that he was backing a candidate or seeking another term in office.

“Stop campaigning with my name, stop abusing me. I’m not the one contesting to be the next Governor of Oyo State,” Makinde said.

His comments come amid growing political activities and alignments in Oyo State as politicians and supporters begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.

The governor’s response appears aimed at drawing a clear boundary between his administration and the emerging political contest, while also warning supporters and political actors against dragging his name into campaigns without his consent.

Makinde’s statement is also likely to fuel discussions about the political succession battle in Oyo State, particularly as various groups begin to indicate interest in who should take over from the incumbent governor.

The governor, however, used the occasion to make his position clear: individuals seeking political office should campaign on their own records and ambitions rather than using his name as a political tool.
