It was shock and disbelief that greeted residents of Olusiri town in Nembe local government area of Bayelsa State on Sunday night, as a young man in his late 20s shot his girlfriend to death for allegedly cheating on him.A source from the community, who reported the incident, said the suspect, Munabo Tonworio, claimed his girlfriend, Victoria Ekalamene, was cheating on him.

The jealous lover was said to have pointed a gun at his victim while interrogating her on her relationship with a man she was sighted with when the gun went off in her face. The shot not only destroyed the girl’s face but snuffed life out of her before she got to the hospital.Following the sound of the gun, residents in the community rushed to the scene of the disaster, overpowered and apprehended the culprit.

The ugly incident, which happened at about 11:00p.m. on Sunday night threw the entire Oluasiri town into panic, leaving relatives of the deceased mourning. An eyewitness, who spoke in confidence, wondered why a man would kill a girl he had not paid her bride price on suspicion of cheating. He said: “We live in a society that you don’t trust anybody including your own shadow. This young guy was a well-known respectful and jovial friend to all and sundry, but has proved himself to be a heartless evil doer.“He raised his gun and shot this innocent lady on no other part of her body but her precious face. He disappointed so many and he must face the law,” he noted.

The jealous lover, apprehended by a mob, was handed over to the Nembe unit of the Nigerian Police Force for prosecution. Bayelsa command spokesman, Asinim Butswats, who confirmed the incident, said the suspect has been detained. He said: “On Sunday at about 10:45p.m., one Munabo Tonworio, male, aged 28 shot dead his lover, Victoria Ekalamene, aged 34, after a quarrel at the residence of the deceased in Oluasiri.

“The murder weapon, a locally cut-to-size gun and an expanded AA ammunition have been recovered from the scene. The suspect has been arrested and is being detained at the SCIID, Yenagoa, while investigation is ongoing.”Meanwhile, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Benue State chapter has described as barbaric and unacceptable the murder of Torkuma Amaa-Bai, son of the National Ex-Officio member of the party, Prince Vincent Yandev Amaa Bai on Sunday in Gboko.

Torkuma, who is the first son of his father and an active member of the PDP, was shot death by unknown gunmen who trailed him to a location in the town at about 10:00p.m. in the presence of onlookers.Confirming the incident, the bereaved father, Prince Amaa Bai, lamented the tragedy, wondering why anyone would want to visit such evil on his family.

In a statement signed by the publicity secretary of the Benue PDP, Bemgba Iprtyom, he called on security agencies to fish out the killers of the son of the PDP chieftain. The statement reads in part: “While it is yet early for us to draw any conclusions about the unfortunate incident, we nevertheless, demand that security agencies must act with dispatch and fish out the perpetrators of this crime.“Prince Amaa-Bai, national official of our great party was also appointed to serve as the director of Security and Intelligence on the State Campaign Organisation of the party in Benue in the just concluded elections.”
