Melaye alleges assassination attempt on his life
As Unknown Gunmen Riddle His House With Bullets
The senator representing Kogi West senatorial district, Dino Melaye, has alleged that hired assassins were contracted to kill him in the early hours of yesterday, as unknown gunmen attacked his residence in Ayetoro with over 200 rounds of bullets.
The security Toyota Hilux van parked by the gate, the caravan Autobots, and the wall of his residence were riddled with bullets in a sporadic shooting that allegedly lasted for more than one hour.
The senator accused the Divisional Police Officer of compromise and complicity, alongside the administrator of Ijunu Local Government, whom he alleged masterminded the attempt on his life.
According to him, his enemies were angered by his rising profile, which was exhibited by the warm reception accorded him from Kabba to Ayetoro on his return two days ago.
“Over 40 to 50 vehicles received me with people trooping out in their thousands in Kabba to receive me, to show excitement. The same thing happened, when we got to Ayetoro, where the entire community mobilised to support me and they all trekked, children, adults, youths and women to follow me home.
“So, I am sure that must have angered them that I am extremely popular with the people. Exactly 12midnight, we started hearing gunshots and they fired more than 200 rounds, and you can see bullet marks on the wall of my building.”
He said if the attempt to assassinate him were based on his outspoken nature, it would not stop him from speaking the truth.
“I have said, if you say the truth you will die, if you lie you will die, but I have chosen to speak the truth and die,” he said.
According to him, such attempts will not deter him in anyway from championing democratic causes.
“Neither can it stop me from speaking against maladministration in Kogi State, or stop me from asking for good Governance in Ijumu Local Government in Kogi West and in Kogi State,” he said.
“I will continue to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves, to be voice of the voiceless. I cannot be cowed or be intimidated.”
Melaye accused the administrator of threatening on radio how he will stop him from stepping into Kogi and Ayetoro.
But in a swift reaction, Hon. Taofic Isah, ALGON chairman, Kogi State and Ijumu Local Government administrator said he was not aware of what happened.
“This is my first time of hearing anything like that. As the administrator of the Local Government, I should be the first person to be contacted. My life has never been a violent one, as I served Dino for almost seven years. Why we had some media war against each other was because of his consistent attack on my governor in the media. I am not even aware that Dino is around.”
He said he had been in the hospital attending to his wife, who was critically sick.
“About four days earlier, I lost my uncle and we did the special prayer two days back. While I was yet to recover from that, my wife took ill. Let Dino prove that I met with the DPO.”
Police public relations officer, William Aya, when contacted, confirmed the incident, saying officers were already on their way to Ayetoro to commence investigations.
