MLSCN inducts 45 varsity students as KWASU graduates 6,891

Forty-Five medical laboratory science students of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Kwara State, were yesterday, inducted into the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN.)

The third set, to be inducted since the inception of the school in 2004, was also issued with provisional licences of practice.  According to the Head of Department (HOD) MLS, Prof Shola Babatunde, of the 45 inductees presented for the final professional MLSCN examination, “32 emerged with Second-Class honours (Upper Division) and 13 with Second-Class honours (Lower Division).”

The disclosure was made at the oath-taking/induction ceremony of the students at the school’s auditorium in Adeta, Ilorin. The HOD hinted that the provisional licences were to enable the inductees to proceed on the mandatory one-year internship programme.

He charged the students: “Employ integrity, honesty, diligence and perseverance. Let the knowledge you have acquired from this great university serve as an instrument to serve humanity, not to exploit it.”

Also speaking, the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof Olabode Kayode, commended the Vice Chancellor, Prof Noah Yusuf, and the entire management for providing the enabling environment for both teachers and students to succeed.

He charged the inductees not to forget the department and the school, saying: “There are many ways for you to improve the lives and conditions of those you are leaving behind, as well as help reposition Al-Hikmah University as one of the best global practices in MLS.”

The founder and chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT), Dr AbdulRaheem Oladimeji, who donated N2 million to the department, urged the inductees to act within the confines of their regulatory/professional governing body.

Represented by the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Dr Sikiru Lanre Nurudeen, the founder said: “It is important to comply with the noble ethics of your profession. I advise you to operate within the benchmarks and standard operating procedures set by your regulatory body.”

The vice chancellor lauded Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for granting the school the leave to use the state’s general hospital, Sobi as its teaching hospital.

MEANWHILE, 71 out of the 6,891 2023/2024 graduating students of Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete are to be awarded First Class degrees. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Jimoh Shaykh-Luqman, disclosed this yesterday in Malete at a press conference heralding the 12th convocation ceremony of the institution slated for December 14.

He said that out of the 6,891 graduates, 6,374 would be awarded first degrees, while 517 would get postgraduate degrees. His words: “71 students will be awarded First Class Degrees, 1,828 Second Class Upper Division, 3,501 are for Second Class Lower Division, while 974 will bag Third Class. 468 students will earn Master’s, while 49 are to be awarded Ph.D.”

Shaykh-Luqman said that the institution had grown exponentially from nine to 11 faculties, which might lead to increasing the undergraduate programmes to 80.

“The university has started its 2024/2025 academic session as a multi-campus institution with the take-off of the Osi Ilesha-Baruba campus.

“We have also completed a 104-bed-space hostel and the first phase of the Student Smart City hostel project is underway, to ensure that students have access to an all-round university culture,” he added.

The vice-chancellor, however, said the institution was faced with land encroachment, but was interfacing with the Kwara Geographical Information Service to permanently address the issue.
