A video of former Nigerian first lady Patience Jonathan rejecting any return to Aso Rock has resurfaced online, drawing attention amid ongoing speculation about her husband, ex-president Goodluck Jonathan, and the 2027 presidential election.
The clip, recorded in May 2025 at an Abuja event where she received the Women Icon Leader of the Year Award from Accolades Dynamics Limited, shows Patience Jonathan stressing the pressures of holding public office.
“The distress of Nigeria is so much that if God manages to bring you out of it, you should glorify Him. Why do you want to go back there? I need peace… My peace is enough,” she said.
Her remarks resurfaced as political groups and northern interests have been linked to efforts to persuade Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 polls. Cleric Bomadi Serimoedumu also claimed in August 2025 that Jonathan would return to Aso Rock.
In the original May speech, Patience Jonathan declared support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration and praised her relationship with First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.
“I told her I would campaign with her. I’m not running. I’m not going back to the villa. If you call me, I will not go,” she said.
She also spoke on women’s political representation, backing the 35 per cent affirmative action policy while criticising the National Assembly’s rejection of gender equality bills.
Meanwhile, presidential aide Bayo Onanuga recently warned Goodluck Jonathan against heeding those urging him to run, recalling the 2015 election defeat.
Goodluck Jonathan, who was president from 2010 to 2015, has not commented on the 2027 rumours. Some associates have advised him to remain outside the race, while groups such as the Nigeria Rescue Mission Organisation continue to call for his candidacy.
Patience Jonathan was recognised at the May ceremony for her work through NGOs focusing on women’s health, empowerment and youth training.
