The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) yesterday certified the Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) at the Lagos and Abuja airports fit for use.

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) yesterday certified the Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) at the Lagos and Abuja airports fit for use.

The certification followed the successful commissioning of the Category III ILS at Runway 18 Right at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos as well as Runway 22 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The ILS at MMIA was at the centre of recent flight disruptions in and out of Lagos.

With harmattan at its peak and sub-optimal ILS due to calibration issues, all Lagos-bound international flights were diverted to Abuja, Accra and Lome airports. An estimate has it that the airlines lost over N3 billion to the disruptions.

NAMA Managing Director, Capt. Fola Akinkuotu, said a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) had been issued accordingly.
