Nigerian content creator and singer, Nasiru Lawal, popularly known as Nasboi, has criticized Nigerian digital publishers and bloggers for selectively amplifying trivial social media content over his consistent commentary on national insecurity and governance.
The comic actor and musician expressed his frustration in a detailed post he shared across his social media platforms. He accused online media outlets of deliberately misleading public perception of his brand by ignoring his socio-political statements while magnifying casual remarks.
“There is no celebrity in Nigeria who talks about insecurity in our country more than me. You can check it on Twitter. But whenever I speak about it and also tweet normal things, the only tweets Nigerian bloggers pick are the random ones, while they ignore the important tweets,” Nasboi stated.
He further noted that this editorial practice misleads the public into questioning his social awareness and empathy regarding national challenges.
He added, “When they post those random tweets, people now think I’m insensitive. Again, but what is our business with the issue between Frank Edoho’s marriage? What concerns us about it? Nigerian bloggers will amplify those kinds of stories instead. When it comes to distracting people, most bloggers do. How many times have they amplified serious issues?”
Nasboi achieved national prominence during the global lockdown period of 2020 through short-form comedy. He gained widespread traction by mimicking the vocal mannerisms, physical gestures, and speaking style of Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Davido. Operating under the fictional persona “Low-Budget Davido,” his satirical videos went viral across Instagram and TikTok, establishing him as one of the standout talents in the competitive digital content creation space.
Recognizing the limitations of being perceived solely as an impersonator, Nasiru deliberately evolved his content niche. He phased out the character to showcase his broader acting capabilities, creating diverse characters and collaborating with established Nollywood actors and fellow skit makers to cement his position as a versatile mainstream entertainer.
Following his comedy success, Nasboi ventured into the music industry to fulfill his long-standing artistic ambitions. His entry into music was marked by critical acclaim, beginning with his 2023 hit single “Lover Boy.” He further cemented his musical footprint with the release of “Umbrella,” a highly successful collaboration with veteran singer Wande Coal, which dominated domestic music charts and social media dance trends. He has since expanded his discography with notable tracks like “Small Money.”
Nasboi has actively woven social commentary and anti-bad governance themes into his musical projects. In his release titled “Hunger Dey,” the song directly addresses the severe economic hardships, inflation, and systemic poverty affecting everyday Nigerians, using his platform to hold leadership accountable.
Also, the artist recently came to the public defense of Nigerian entertainers, whom the public frequently attacks for allegedly remaining silent during periods of national crisis or economic instability. Nasboi recently lashed out at Nigerian netizens who consistently call out celebrities for not leading protests or speaking up about national issues.
He argued that it is hypocritical for the public to demand constant advocacy from entertainers when fans also come for them even when they speak, noting that not everyone is interested in political matters. Nasboi maintained that while he and several peers always use their platforms to speak on national security and governance, the deliberate distraction caused by online blogs feeds the narrative that celebrities are detached from the struggles of the people.
