Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Prof. Mohammed Sani Haruna, has stressed that no industrialisation effort could yield meaningful result without development of Nigeria’s iron and steel sector.

He added that to run the nation’s industries effectively and grow the real sector, Nigeria needs to build most of its machines and equipment locally to deepen innovations and production.

Consequently, NASENI and National Metallurgical Development Centre (NMDC) Jos, yesterday, in Abuja, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to revamp the steel sector and other allied industries.

The Jos, Plateau State-based outfit was established to carry out research and development activities for metallurgical and allied industries to engender growth of the nation’s solid minerals sector, while NASENI has the mandate of providing research and developmental works in the areas of capital goods, machines and equipment for purposes of developing a home-grown technology.

Haruna said: “Without the full participation of NMDC and the metallurgical development subsector of the economy, it is extremely difficult to industrialise Nigeria.”

He clarified that the agreement was to provide a threshold for resuscitation Nigeria’s steel and industrial sectors. In his remarks, Director General/Chief Executive of NMDC, Prof. Linus Asukwo, lauded NASENI for promoting scientific and technological transformation of the Nigerian economy.
