The 10th National Assembly Legislative Support Group has addressed the recent comments made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio regarding statutory payments to federal lawmakers, asserting that misinterpretations by mischief makers are distorting his words.
Following the conclusion of the screening and confirmation of President Bola Tinubu’s ministerial nominees, Senate President Akpabio addressed his fellow senators before adjourning plenary to September 26. He mentioned that money had been sent by Magaji Tambuwal, the clerk of the national assembly, for the senators to “enjoy” their holidays. This statement was widely circulated, leading to criticism of the parliament.
Responding to the backlash, the National Assembly Support Group released a statement signed by Umeh Faith, Kabiru Yusuf, and Fidelis Sunday. The group asserted that mischief makers are twisting the statement to tarnish the senator’s reputation. They clarified that the Senate President was referring to the payment of salaries, allowances, and accommodation fees as outlined in the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission Act.
The group appealed to the public not to misconstrue the statement, explaining that the jovial manner in which the message was delivered led to misunderstandings.
