Naval officer, two policemen arrested for attempted kidnap
The Kogi State police command yesterday paraded five suspects including a naval officer, Nature Habila Jesse, two serving police officers, Suleiman Isiaka and Ibrahim James, for an attempted kidnap of a five-year-old at Ojikpadala in Egwume, Dekina Local Government Area of the state.
Recovered from the suspects were one AK47 rifle with breech No. 06796, 28 rounds of live ammunition, one locally-made pistol and an Opel Vectra saloon car with registration number GYB 129XA, Bauchi.
It was gathered that one Shehu Agba, who was the mastermind of the kidnap attempt, used Suleiman Isiaka, to bring together some of the security operatives for the operation. Shehu had worked for the victim’s father as an electrician when he wired his new house in Egume for N300,000.
After several attempts to reach out to the father of the victim for ransom and he was not cooperating, they decided to strike but unknown to the kidnappers, the house was fortified with security agents.
“Upon information that some hoodlums at Early Base Hotel, Idah Road, Anyigba, were threatening to kidnap one Victor Ukwubile Nathaniel, five-year-old son of Nathaniel Ukwubile, operatives swung into action, intercepted and arrested the suspects where the exhibited were recovered.”
The suspects who did not deny the allegations were only trading blames over who involved who by proxy. The naval officer, who was remorseful, said he was framed up though he never denied having close links with members of the gang.
However, Nathaniel Ukwubile alleged that Shehu, leader of the gang, who wired his house in Egwume, had been calling him with threats to pay N5 million or he would be abducted. “For more than one month, this guy has been calling me to give him N5 million, I asked who was talking, he said he is a kidnapper. I gave him N20,000 in the last two weeks and he told me because I am good in helping people, that is why they have not kidnapped me yet.”
The Commissioner of Police, Ali Janga, who paraded 17 criminals linked to kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, and homicide, said “as soon as we finish our investigations, all the suspects found wanting would be arraigned in court. Meanwhile, the two policemen and naval officer have been tried and dismissed.”
