Navy commissions housing projects for ratings

In a bid to create more accommodation for naval officers Navy Town, Ojo, Lagos, the Nigerian Navy under the leadership of Vice Admiral Ibok-ette Ekwe Ibas, has commissioned two multi-million-naira buildings for both Lieutenants and Senior Ratings.

The building construction is a part of the efforts being put in place to reduce accommodation challenges bedeviling the Nigerian Navy.

In his remarks, Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Oladele Daji said, “I am at a vantage position to make this assessment given the series of landmark projects that were commissioned in this command during the 63rd Anniversary of the Nigerian Navy in June 2019, all geared towards improving Nigerian Navy capacity and personnel welfare.

“It is against this background that I am pleased to be part of the ceremony to commission yet another accommodation facilities at the Lieutenants’ Quarters and Senior Rates’ Quarters, to consolidate on the success achieved so far.

“I, therefore, make bold to state that this is further testimony to the determination of the Chief of the Naval Staff and the Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari to continuously improve on the welfare needs of Nigerian Navy personal and their families. It is certain that these improvements are already having a positive impact on the operation and efficiency of the Nigerian Navy”.

According to him, the Nigerian Navy is still facing difficulties in the area of accommodation, but these ones we are commissioning will go a long way to ameliorate the challenges.

He further enjoined the beneficiaries of the facilities to exercise the utmost care in the use of the houses and also maintain them properly.

“A new regime of stringent inspections and guidelines for the use of these facilities has been promulgated and would be enforced”, he added.

In addition, it was gathered that the contract for the construction of 2 Blocks of 2-bedroom flats consisting 32 flats for senior rates was awarded to Messrs Kharis Engineering Services Limited in March 2017.

Navy Town is the largest and most populous naval barracks in Nigeria and it accommodates both officers and Ratings.
