NCA seeks mining cadastre partnership to advance geospatial data

The Nigerian Cartographic Association (NCA) is seeking a partnership with the Mining Cadastre Office (MCO) to advance geospatial data management and applications nationwide.

The MCO, which plays a pivotal role in ensuring transparency and accountability in the allocation of mineral rights, is regarded as a key stakeholder in promoting sustainable growth within Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.

NCA President, Prof. Momoh Lawal Rilwani, disclosed this in Abuja during a courtesy visit to the Director-General of the MCO, Engr. Obadiah Simon Nkom.

The visit also centred on the association’s forthcoming 46th Annual Conference, scheduled to be held in Abuja from September 8 to 12, 2026, which is expected to attract experts and professionals in cartography, mining, and allied fields.

The discussion also focused on areas of synergy between the two institutions in advancing geospatial data management and mineral title administration.

Rilwani emphasised that, in addition to association members, the event will also attract participation from leading experts worldwide.

He noted that the gathering will provide a platform for sharing knowledge, innovations, and best practices, while underscoring the critical role of geospatial data in mineral exploration, mining operations, and sustainable development.

He said: “The conference aims to bring together professionals and experts in the fields of cartography and mining to share knowledge, innovations, and best practices. The conference theme is expected to highlight the critical role of geospatial data in mineral exploration, mining operations, and sustainable development.”

In response, the MCO Director-General, Engr. Obadiah Simon Nkom, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration and pledged the agency’s support towards ensuring the success of the conference.

He assured the NCA delegation of the MCO’s support and cooperation in ensuring the conference’s success.

He said: “The Nigerian Cartographic Association and the Mining Cadastre Office have a shared interest in leveraging geospatial data to drive economic growth, sustainable development, and informed decision-making.

“This visit marks an important step towards fostering a strategic partnership between the two organisations. The Nigerian Cartographic Association is a professionally recognised body dedicated to promoting the science and art of cartography in Nigeria.

“With over four decades of existence, the association has been at the forefront of advancing geospatial knowledge, skills, and applications in the country.”

Nkom also commended the NCA for its over four decades of contributions to the advancement of geospatial knowledge, skills, and applications in Nigeria.

As Nigeria’s principal regulatory agency for mineral title administration, the MCO is responsible for granting, managing, and monitoring mining licenses, thereby centralising the link between cartography and mineral development.
