Newly elected Taraba CAN chairman, pledges unity, justice

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Taraba State chapter, has elected Rev. Fr. Dr. Williams Awoshiri as its new chairman, with a strong commitment to fostering unity and promoting social justice during his tenure.

Speaking in Jalingo after his peaceful election, Awoshiri emphasized that his leadership would be anchored on CAN’s guiding motto, “That they all may be one” (John 17:21).

He vowed to prioritize Christian unity and interfaith collaboration as foundations for peace and development in the state.

“There can be no peace without unity, and no development without justice,” Awoshiri stated. “My administration will work with like minds from all faiths to promote peace, justice, and development in Taraba.”

The new chairman, who is a Catholic priest and academic, also highlighted the importance of inclusivity and openness in leadership, adding that bridging denominational and interreligious divides would be a key focus.

“Our diversity should be our strength, not our division,” he said, stressing the need to unite the Christian faith to effectively spread the gospel and draw more people to Christ.

The election was observed to have been supervised by a delegation from CAN’s national leadership, led by Rev. (Dr.) Mrs. Uzoaku Williams, on behalf of the CAN National President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh.

Other newly elected executive members include Rev. Samuel Ibrahim Jatau (CCN) as Vice Chairman, Rev. Dr. Nelson Dunah (CPFN/PFN) as Secretary, Rev. Samaila Tsapta (TEKAN/ECWA) as Assistant Secretary, and Apostle Sunday Adetiba (OAIC) as Treasurer.
