For Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the two governorship contests coming up in the southwestern state of Ondo and Edo State in the South-South are a test of the party’s half-term score card. Ripples from the party’s primary in Ondo State made the news early this week.

Battling with their own election blues, both Hillary Clinton of the Democrats and his Republican opponent, Donald Trump were a permanent fixture in the news this week.

A former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), emerged the standard-bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the November 26 governorship polls after a closely contested primary. His emergence has been described as a repeat of history.

Making history as the first American woman to be the presidential nominee of any major political party in the US, Hillary Clinton quest to become American first female president is on. But she’s not looking good in the polls as her opponent, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump landed just ahead of Democrat Hillary Clinton in a new national poll released on Tuesday.

Both candidates engaged in a verbal slugfest, assailing one another on multiple fronts and in coarse terms as the  presidential campaign hit the home stretch.

Like Hillary Clinton, Nigeria’s Senator Stella Oduah has a headache of her own. But unlike Madam Clinton, the headache is not presidential; it is domestic. After losing a son last week, the ex-husband of the former Nigeria’s aviation minister raised an alarm that another is at the risk of dying. 

Nigerian armyIn the Niger Delta, tension rose during the week as military authorities moved more military personnel, heavy weapons, gunships and vehicles  to Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta States, to stem incessant attacks on oil installations and end the smouldering seven-month militancy.

In sports, Wayne Rooney became England’s most capped outfield player when he was awarded his 116th cap by new manager Sam Allardyce in Sunday’s opening 2018 World Cup qualifier away to Slovakia.Team captain Rooney, 30, surpasses his former England team-mate David Beckham, who was capped 115 times by his country.

Looking to rejig its record as one of the most innovative mobile phone makers in the world, Apple on Wednesday unveiled iPhone 7 and larger iPhone 7 Plus, with new camera technology, 50-meter water resistance and other features.

But for most Nigerians, buying an iPhone 7  at the rate of $649 may not be on the card. With the recession biting harder, it is time to make hard choices, just as the CBN governor Godwin Emefiele advised. 

The Guardian’s columnist DareBabarinsa argued during the week that one of the major causes of the recession is Nigerians’ neglect of locally made goods due to over-dependence on imported products.

Like Nigeria’s current economic state, urinary tract infection (UTI) is avoidable. Dr. (Mrs.) Olaide Omotosho-Ikuru, a medical personnel, told The Guardian that no doubt, there could be a witch’s brew of germs, whenever one uses public restrooms. However, many people’s thinking that toilet seats are public enemy number one and a playground for organisms responsible for STDs, such as chlamydia or gonorrhoea, is not correct.

coffeeAnd in case you are suffering from high blood pressure, you may want to stay clear of caffeinated coffee. So we learnt on Monday. A research published in the American Journal of Hypertension has found that patients who drink the occasional cup could be reducing the effect of medication for lowering blood pressure.
