NGO begins campaign against poverty, injustice to widows
A NON-GOVERNMENTAL organisation that focuses on training and empowering widows, Pat Utomi Widow Support Centre (WSC), yesterday, began its campaign to address the poverty and injustice faced by millions of widows in Lagos.
Founder, Centre for Values in Leadership (CVL), Prof. Pat Utomi, advocated viable legislative enactment to protect the rights of widows in Nigeria to forestall further deprivation they suffer in various communities.
He said the Centre over the years had organised entrepreneurship programmes for the widows, such as skills acquisition in bakery, soap-making, cosmetology, ICT, tailoring and other business skills.
Utomi further said that the Centre also set up a widowhood rights programme, which focused on sensitising widows about their rights.
ALSO, Co-ordinator, Justice Development and Peace Commission, Victoria Amede, advised widows to work on their self-esteem and dignity. She urged them to be bold and not see themselves being widows as end of life.
