The Niger State Government has constructed more than 1,000 kilometres of roads across the state’s 25 local government areas between May 29, 2023, and May 29, 2026.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works and Infrastructure Development, QS Hassan Baba Etsu, disclosed this during a press briefing marking the third anniversary of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s administration in Minna. The Ministry of Information and Orientation coordinated the briefing.
According to Etsu, the administration is also undertaking the construction of six flyovers and one underpass bridge as part of its infrastructure development agenda.
He explained that work is ongoing on the 35-kilometre Bida Ring Road project in Bida Local Government Area.
Etsu noted that while significant road projects have been executed in urban centres, particularly Minna, the state capital, all 25 local government areas have benefited from the administration’s infrastructure drive. He disclosed that the government awarded contracts for the construction of five kilometres of roads in each of the 25 local councils.
To improve transportation and connectivity, the state government has also embarked on major road projects, including the Kontagora–Rijau Road and the Wawa–Babanana Road, both of which are currently under construction.
Providing a breakdown of the road projects, Etsu stated that about 100 kilometres of roads have been constructed in Minna, while each of the 25 local government areas received at least five kilometres of road infrastructure.
He further revealed that the State Executive Council recently approved the construction of a 13-kilometre road linking Mararaba Dandaudu to Kuta in Shiroro Local Government Area.
Describing the scale of infrastructure development as unprecedented, Etsu said the road projects represent one of the most ambitious road construction programmes undertaken by any state government in Nigeria.
Speaking on developments in the health sector, the Commissioner for Primary Healthcare, Dr. Murtala Mohammed Bagana, said the Bago administration has constructed 20 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) equipped with perimeter fencing, staff quarters, labour rooms, laboratories, and accommodation for medical personnel.
According to him, the facilities have also been provided with qualified healthcare workers to improve access to quality healthcare services in rural communities.
On education, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Hadiza Asabe Mohammed, said the government has significantly improved feeding arrangements in boarding schools across the state.
“Our boarding schools are well-fed with nutritious meals, and the learning environment remains conducive for students,” she said.
However, she disclosed that boarding schools located in communities affected by banditry remain temporarily closed as part of measures to ensure the safety of students and staff.
