The National Chairman of Accord Party, Prof. Chris Imumolen, has shown solidarity with victims of the flood disaster in Borno State, Northeast Nigeria.
Through his non-governmental organisation, PCI Foundation, the Accord Party leader distributed food items to about 3,000 people affected by the flooding in Maiduguri, the state capital.
The recent flooding in Borno submerged several residential homes, displaced tens of thousands of residents, and caused zoo animals to escape into the streets.
Authorities reported that about 30 people lost their lives due to the Maiduguri flash flood, with over a million people affected. The UN estimates the total number of displaced persons at 414,000.
The disaster was attributed to the collapse of the Alau dam on the Ngadda River in the state last week.
Speaking in Maiduguri during the distribution of relief items, Mr. Samshudeen Adamu, the National Coordinator of PCI Foundation, said the gesture stemmed from Prof. Chris Imumolen’s goodwill to support the people of Borno during these challenging times.
While expressing Prof. Imumolen’s sympathy to those who lost their livelihoods due to the disaster, he called on relevant government agencies to ensure the safe evacuation of victims and to take proactive measures to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases.
In his remarks, a former Deputy Director of Town Planning of the Ministry of Land and Survey, Hon. Abdullahi Ntakai, thanked PCI Foundation for its humanitarian efforts, which he said would help strengthen the bond of unity among Nigeria’s ethnic nationalities.
