Afenifere US Chapter mourns Fasoranti, hails role in pro-democracy struggle

Pa Reuben-Fasoranti

The Afenifere US Chapter has mourned the death of its revered leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, describing him as an elder statesman, educationist and committed advocate of democracy whose contributions to Yorubaland and Nigeria would remain enduring.

In a condolence statement on Wednesday by its chairman, Dr Odimayo Akindutire, the chapter extended its sympathies to the Fasoranti family and the Yoruba people following the announcement of his death on October 20, 2026.

The statement said, “Baba’s contributions to the advancement of Yorubaland and Nigeria cannot be overstated. His commitment to peace, conflict resolution, constructive sociopolitical engagement, and principled leadership earned him enduring respect.”

The chapter noted that Fasoranti devoted much of his life to education, serving as a teacher, school principal and proprietor. It said his establishment of Omolere Nursery and Primary School and Akure High School reflected his belief in education as a foundation for individual advancement and community development.

It added, “His legacy therefore extends beyond public affairs into the classrooms, institutions, and lives he helped shape.”

The group also highlighted Fasoranti’s involvement in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) and the struggle to restore democratic governance in Nigeria, noting that he stood alongside other patriots against military dictatorship.

“Alongside other patriots, Baba stood against military dictatorship and remained steadfast in the pursuit of freedom, justice, and accountable government. His example during those difficult years remains an enduring lesson in conviction and sacrifice,” the statement said.

The Afenifere US Chapter further described the late leader as a man of peace and compassion who remained committed to humanity despite personal tragedies and trials.

Expressing the chapter’s grief, Akindutire said, “For us in the Afenifere US Chapter, Baba’s passing is a deeply felt loss. His wisdom, fatherly counsel, and unwavering commitment to our shared values will be sorely missed.”

The statement reaffirmed the chapter’s commitment to the ideals of unity, justice, education, peaceful coexistence and selfless service, which it said defined Fasoranti’s life.

“Although Baba has departed this earthly life, his legacy and ideals live on. His example will continue to inspire generations of leaders and all who seek the progress of Yorubaland and Nigeria,” it added.

The chapter prayed that God would grant Fasoranti eternal rest and comfort his family, the Afenifere community and others mourning his death.
