Yesterday, property worth several millions of naira was destroyed following a fire outbreak at a five-star hotel near Onitsha, Anambra State.
Though the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, an eyewitness said the hotel located at 3-3 Estate in Nkwelle Ezunaka area, near Onitsha, started at about 4:00a.m.
The eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, described the incident as “a mystery fire”; which forced lodgers to scamper for safety.
He told newsmen that property worth millions of naira were burnt, and thanked God that fire fighters later intervened to save the situation, as it did not spread to the rest of the buildings.
When contacted, spokesperson for Anambra Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident.
According to him, no life was lost in the fire, while the cause of fire is yet to be ascertained.
He said: “We got the information at about 4:30a.m. and our men were quickly deployed to the scene who cordoned off the area.
“We don’t want a situation where people take advantage of the fire incident to cart away property that are not their own.
“The situation is under control, we are happy that no life was lost, our men are still there, and Fire Service as well”.
