Miss Oluwaseun Oluwafunmilayo, a final-year student of Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) who is serving as one-day Vice-Chancellor of the University, has urged President Bola Tinubu to consider initiating a One-day President of the country program for youths.
She said such an initiative would bring Nigerian youths closer to leadership in the country and give them a greater sense of belonging.
Oluwafunmilayo also lauded the President for helping millions of indigent Nigerian students access quality tertiary education in public institutions through the Students Loan Fund.
She stated this yesterday while briefing the media as One-day Vice-Chancellor of FUOYE, having been selected based on academic and exemplary behaviour.
She said: “As FUOYE has initiated a One-day Vice-Chancellor contest, I want to urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to kindly initiate a One-day President of Nigeria challenge for Nigerian youths.
“This, I think, will give the Nigerian youth more opportunity to interact with people in power and also bring to the knowledge of the President our yearnings.
“I also wish to appreciate our dear President on his initiative on NELFUND, which has been assisting millions of Nigerian students in public varsities to access education. This is a highly laudable initiative, and we really appreciate him for this.
“We acknowledge the persistent issues surrounding unstable internet and mobile network access, which pose a significant challenge to both academic and social life. We have initiated discussions with network providers such as MTN Telecommunications to explore viable solutions.”
Speaking on mental health, the one-day VC said this remains a troubling issue, though often underemphasized.
She said, “We are proposing a partnership between the University’s Guidance and Counselling unit and the University Health Centre to launch a sustained mental health advocacy campaign.
“This initiative focuses on awareness-raising, determination, and improving access to psychological support. Planned activities include periodic mental health outreach programmes, peer support groups, and collaboration with medical professionals to provide counselling and emergency response services. We encourage the University community to prioritise mental well-being just as highly as physical health.”
Also speaking on the hardship faced daily by many students, she said, “We have drafted a proposal for the establishment of a campus-based commercial market where price-regulated, affordable essentials will be within easy reach.
“It will also support student-led enterprises and create part-time employment opportunities. We believe this will foster economic inclusivity and significantly reduce the need for off-campus dependence.”
