Man shot dead in Ibadan

Tragedy struck in Ibadan on Sunday as a yet-to-be-identified man was shot dead a few blocks away from a popular lounge located at Bodija, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Oyo State Command, Adewale Osifeso, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, said the command has begun an immediate inquiry into the incident.

Osifeso stated that the case has since been referred to the Homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku, with a Deputy Commissioner of Police leading the investigation as directed by the Commissioner of Police in the state, Sonubi Ayodele.

He clarified that there were no killings by police nor recorded deaths of any students before, during, or after the lawful dispersal of onlookers from the scene of the crime.

He said, “Also worthy of note is that the swift presence of police at the scene minutes after it was reported was to maintain law and order and not to further increase the pandemonium, as reported by some spaces on social media where they claimed that the police accidentally shot and killed an onlooker (student) during the dispersal.”

He, however, said normalcy has since returned to the area with the adequate deployment of operational and intelligence command assets to prevent the hijacking of the scene by hoodlums.

“Further updates about the investigation would be communicated accordingly, please,” he added.
