Ten passengers were killed and many others were injured in a road crash along the Jos-Bauchi road, in Jos North Local Council of Plateau State.
The incident involved two trailers and two mini buses and occurred after a military checkpoint at about 12:12a.m. yesterday.
Peter Longsan, Superintendent and Route Commander, Public Education Officer for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Plateau State Command, confirmed the incident.
He explained that the rescue operation was carried out jointly by their members, police, ministry officers and villagers.
“The crash occurred at about 12:12 a.m. It involved four vehicles, two trailers and two mini buses (Ford Galaxy). 19 people were involved, 17 males and two females. 10 adult men died on the spot, and the injured victims were taken to General Hospital Miyabarkate, Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) Jos, and Plateau State Specialist Hospital for medical attention.
The remains of the deceased have been deposited at Plateau Specialist Hospital and Bingham University Teaching Hospital morgues, while two of the corpses were claimed by the officials of the National Union of Road
Transport Workers (NURTW) for internment,” Peter said.
He further explained that while further investigation is still ongoing, preliminary findings revealed speed and reckless driving were major contributory factors that led to the crash.
The sector commander called on commuters to desist from night trips, avoid excessive speed, dangerous driving and take their personal safety with utmost importance.
