12 die in Yobe road accident
A tragic road accident claimed the lives of twelve individuals, including ten men, one woman, and a female child, on Tuesday night along the Bayamari-Geidam road in Yobe State.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander in Yobe, Corps Commander Livinus Yilzoom, confirmed the incident in a press release issued in Damaturu, the state capital.
According to Yilzoom, the accident occurred at about 10:00 pm near Chelluri village, 20 kilometers from Geidam.
A stationary Howo truck with registration number MAG 831 ZR, belonging to Dan Nene Construction Company, was struck by a Sharon mini bus (registration number BAU 124 YF), which subsequently burst into flames. All 12 occupants of the bus were burned beyond recognition.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident was caused by the obstruction posed by the stationary truck, compounded by excessive speed and overloading by the bus driver.
The Sector Commander used the opportunity to warn motorists against the dangers of night travel, especially during the harmattan season, which reduces visibility and increases the risk of accidents.
He noted the need for strict adherence to traffic regulations to prevent such tragic occurrences.
