The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), popularly known as KAI, has secured the conviction of 12 individuals for offences related to prostitution and breach of the peace.

The convictions followed a dislodgement operation led by the Corps Marshal of the Agency.

The convicted individuals, all female, received eight-month prison sentences.

They were arraigned before Chief Magistrate Adefioye of the Special Offences Court in Oshodi for offences contravening Section 142(1)(a)(b) and 168(1)(d) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State.

Twelve of the 19 suspects were sentenced, while seven others who pleaded not guilty were remanded in custody until December 18 for further hearings.

Corps Marshal Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole (rtd) expressed satisfaction with the convictions, stating that the THEMES agenda of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu prioritises a habitable environment for businesses.

He highlighted the deteriorating situation in Obalende, which necessitated large-scale enforcement against those engaging in activities that degrade the environment.

Cole commended the judgement and emphasised that the Agency remains committed to upholding the law despite facing attacks on its operatives during their duties.

He warned street traders and hawkers against displaying their wares on setbacks, lay-bys, medians, road verges, kerbs, and gutter slabs.

He also urged pedestrians to use bridges when crossing highways to avoid arrest and prosecution.
