Indigenes of the Eziukwu-Aba Autonomous community in Aba South Local Council of Abia State have set up a N20 million education and empowerment endowment fund for indigent youths in the area.

Indigenes of the Eziukwu-Aba Autonomous community in Aba South Local Council of Abia State have set up a N20 million education and empowerment endowment fund for indigent youths in the area.

Chairman of the Eziukwu-Aba autonomous community, Prince Chidiebere Ogbonna disclosed this during the 2024 Eziukwu-Aba yearly cultural festival celebration with the theme: “Promoting our cultural heritage”, and unveiling of their new Ikoro at the Eziukwu-Aba Civic Centre.

Ogbonna, who was represented by Okenwa Prince Ahuruonye disclosed that the N20 million endowment fund was to empower indigent students and artisans or small and medium scale entrepreneurs of the community.

According to him, the target was to use the fund to train 15 law graduates, 15 medical students, 10 Engineering students and other graduates in different academic disciplines for a start within 10 years.

He added that more people will benefit as funds improve.

Ogbonna said the beneficiaries would be selected on merit, and announced that a committee of credible individuals would be set up to ensure that only those who fall into the intended category benefit from the exercise.

He stressed that the essence of the exercise was to ensure that indigent youths in the community were not denied the opportunity to achieve their dreams because of lack of funds.

“We understand that youths are the future of tomorrow, and for us to have a responsive and responsible future, we must ensure that we empower our youths and channel their energy positively,” he added.

In his speech, the traditional ruler of the community His Royal Majesty, Eze Raymond Dimgba Ogbonna, Ezeoha, the 4th of Eziukwu-Aba autonomous community, represented by the community’s Prime Minister, High Chief Jonah Onwughara Ukaegbu, commended members of the community for their kind gestures, and appealed for more support.

He also charged the youths to engage in useful ventures, urging them to live in peace and protect public and private facilities in the community.

The President General of the community, Elder Chiemela Fredrick, thanked the traditional ruler for approving and supporting the celebration, adding that the community has recorded more successes under the traditional ruler.

Fredrick appealed to Governor Alex Otti to consider giving the community’s internal road a facelift as he embarks on the construction of rural roads in the state.

He also noted that such a project would give more opportunities for greater economic development in the community.

Fredrick also appealed for the restoration of power supply in the community, which has been in the dark for the past six months, following the outrageous monthly electricity bills from Aba Power Limited.
