Activist urges FRSC to retrain, certify truck drivers after rise in accidents

A UK-based social activist, Ifeanyi Samson, has urged the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to embark on retraining and certification of truck drivers in order to curb the rising cases of road accidents in Nigeria.

His call follows recent public concern over the case of Ruth Otabor, a university graduate and relative of Big Brother Naija housemate Phyna, who had both legs amputated after being hit by a lorry driver.

In a statement yesterday, Samson stressed the need for Nigeria to prioritise the safety of its citizens by enforcing standards across the transport sector. He recalled losing his father in a crash caused by an untrained driver, noting that such tragedies highlight the devastating consequences of poor road safety practices.

He called for the establishment of stringent standards for drivers’ training, vehicle maintenance and speed monitoring. He also urged measures to curb reckless driving, over-speeding and disregard for human life.

Samson further advocated mandatory retraining for all drivers, strict speed monitoring, real-time truck tracking, public disclosure of safety policies and accident data, as well as collaboration with FRSC for independent inspections and safety certification.

He lamented the disparity in support for accident victims, pointing out that while high-profile cases attract attention, many Nigerians suffer silently without adequate help or visibility.

Samson called for comprehensive measures to guarantee the safety of all road users and to prevent further tragedies.
