Auchi Poly 80/89 marks 6th reunion, gives scholarship to 5 students

The Auchi Polytechnic Alumni Association 1980–1989 sets, fondly called ‘Auchi Oldies,’ marked its 6th anniversary last week with a reunion and giving back to society in Lagos. At the dinner/gala night to end a three-day event to celebrate the reunion, five students were given scholarship sponsored the 80-89 sets. They are Comfort Ndidi, Friday Marvelous, Promise Uareme, Jevita Ugboaku, and Prince Oghenekevwe. The Deputy Rector, Eng. Edith Oyati, also a member Auchi Oldies, represented the Rector and received the cheques on behalf of the recipients.

Also on the night, the former GMD of Zenith Bank, Ebenezer Onyeagwu announced the prize gift of N500,000 for the best accounting student including writing off the registration fees for the student that got chartered as an accountant while in school. Another of the alumni, Dr Nelson promised N200,000 for the best graduating student in quantity survey for the next ten years.

Before the gala night, the auchi oldies as the set is called, led by its President, Onowu Peter Nwadei, visited the Holy Family Home for the Elderly at Regina Mundi Catholic Church, Mushin, Lagos, on March 22, where food items and toiletries were donated to the home.

Responding to an urgent list of further needs from the home, including medications for hypertension and diabetes, adult diapers, and wheelchairs, the Oldies’ executive revisited the home on April 29 with a large quantity of drugs and adult diapers for the elderly.

In his welcome address, the Chairman of the planning committee, Mr. Chris Obode, whose speech was read by the Committee’s Secretary, Hope Aiguobasinmin, thanked all those who made the 2025 reunion/AGM a success, noting “Our many first time experiences of our alma mater are nostalgic.”

“Memories they say are stronger than aspirations. No theme is choisen for this year’s AGM/Reunion as we seek to continue with that of 2024- Equipping the Foundary workshop of the Mechanical Engineering Department of Auchi Polytechnic.”

He appreciated the planning committee members for their dedication and the executive for given them the opportunity to organize this year’s AGM/Reunion.

In his speech, the association’s President, Peter Nwadei, noted that between the last reunion and that of 2025, the group has made significant progress in its activities in the area of welfare for members and projects.

“Our life and health insurance are running and more members are keying into them. At the last reunion, we received over 220,000,000 for the building of Foundry Laborary at the polytechnic. I am glad that this project has taken off after the initial logistic delays. We are sure the project will be delivered in a very short time.”

He also noted that within the period some members have been honoured and decorated by different bodies including inaugurating the Board of trustees of the association headed Osa Osunde.

The three days programme to mark this year’s reunion was filled with fun filled activities and a play back of memories as they threw banters at each other recalling some of the things they did as young men and women on campus.
