The Ogun State government, yesterday, directed managers of its Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) in Kobape and other areas of the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway corridor to regulate the speed limit of drivers using the road following the tragic death of four pupils from Iddo Primary School, Kobape, in Obafemi Owode Local Council.
The pupils were fatally crushed by a speeding Toyota Corolla last Wednesday while returning home from school.
The accident incited anger among youths and some residents of Sowo Village, who blocked the Abeokuta-Sagamu highway and nearly attacked the driver of the car in protest against the minors’ death.
Fortunately, security operatives intervened to rescue the driver.
Spokesperson for TRACE, Babatunde Akinbiyi, stated in a release that the crash occurred when the driver of the car with registration number, KSF 579 DM, lost control due to over-speeding and rammed into the pupils on walkway.
Bodies of the victims were immediately after taken to the General Hospital, Ijaye, where they were pronounced dead by the attending and then deposited in the hospital’s mortuary.
Responding to the incident, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, announced that the state government instructed its traffic managers to enforce speed limits and monitor drivers caught speeding excessively along the highway.
Akinmade condoled with the parents of the victims and assured that the government was taking steps to implement measures to enforce traffic regulations and arrest drivers who exceed speed limits on the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway to prevent future tragedies.
He emphasised that the present administration would continue to educate the citizens through its traffic agency on the importance of obeying traffic laws and avoiding excessive speeding on the expressway to reduce road crashes in the state.
