Borno police nab man over drug-related offences, intercept tons of illicit drugs

The Borno State Police Command has intercepted large consignment of various illicit drugs along the Baga road bypass, Maiduguri, the state capital.

The command said, in its sustained efforts to  combat the trafficking and abuse of illicit drugs and other prohibited substances, the State’s police command, under the leadership of CP Naziru Abdulmajid recorded another significant breakthrough with the arrest of a suspect and the recovery of a large consignment of illicit substances concealed in several sacks.

In a released statement on Sunday in Maiduguri, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso disclosed: “On 26th June 2026, at about 7:11 p.m, operatives of the Command’s X-Squad, acting on credible intelligence, intercepted an Isuzu Bedford pick-up vehicle along Baga Road-Bypass, Maiduguri,” revealing that a thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 55 sacks, containing dozens of 60ml bottles of an illicit substance popularly known as “Gumm.”

Daso said preliminary investigation also revealed that the illicit substances were being conveyed to Ngamboru Ngala LGA, with the intention of smuggling them across international borders.

The ASP explained that during the operation, one Babagana Modu,51, who was identified as the driver of the vehicle, was arrested.

The suspect confessed to commiting the crime during investigation that he had been contracted to transport the consignment to its intended destination. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other persons connected to the illegal operation who are currently at large.

He said the the case remained under active investigation, and further details will be communicated as investigations progress.

The Borno State Police Command reiterated its unwavering commitment to combating drug trafficking and other criminal activities across the state.
