Gunmen

A Chevron employee and prominent businessman, Mr Samuel Ekerenam, has been abducted by gunmen in Eket, Akwa Ibom State.

The incident occurred last weekend around 10:00 p.m. as Ekerenam closed his business, Hephzibah Shopping Mall, located on Afaha Uqua Obok-Idim road.

During the attack, Ekerenam’s driver was tragically shot and killed at the scene. His police escort also sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

According to an eyewitness who wishes to remain anonymous, the assailants lay in wait for Ekerenam at his business premises, having trailed him from his home. They opened fire indiscriminately, causing panic amongst residents, before seizing Ekerenam and fleeing the scene. The police escort, despite his injuries, managed to escape.

However, the motive for the kidnapping remains unclear. Family sources say they have been unable to establish contact with the kidnappers and are unsure whether a ransom demand will be made.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed the incident and is currently investigating the matter.
ASP Timfon John, the Police Public Relations Officer, stated that authorities are working tirelessly to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure Ekerenam’s safe return.
