Comedian Sanku dies in Oyo car crash

The Nigerian comedy community has been thrown into mourning following the death of fast-rising skitmaker, Raji Samad Adetola, popularly known as Mr Sanku Comedy.

He died in a car accident along the Ogbomoso–Oyo Road in the early hours of Monday, September 1, 2025. Eyewitnesses said the vehicle veered off the road and somersaulted. Sanku was rushed to the hospital but later pronounced dead, while fellow comedian Wakil sustained injuries.

His death quickly went viral, sparking grief across social media. Actress Funmi Awelewa wrote: “The pain, the effort, the strength, the struggle… walai nothing make sense. I’m heartbroken. Even film sef never come out! It does not make sense.” Influencer Jidex, who posted a video of the mangled car, described the loss as “heartbreaking”, noting it came just a day after the passing of Phyna’s sister, Ruth Otabor.

Colleagues and fans hailed Sanku as a vibrant talent whose skits, blending cultural humour with everyday pranks, resonated with young audiences, especially in Ibadan. Many described his sudden passing as a huge loss to Nigeria’s online comedy scene.

His death also struck a chilling note for followers, coming barely 25 days after he released a skit imagining life after death. In the August 4 video, he portrayed himself in heaven lamenting the absence of familiar faces, before urging his partner to head to hell so they could “enjoy life together.” That skit, along with his last post hinting at life’s uncertainties, has since been seen by fans as a farewell.
