Court grants Abia lawmaker N500, 000 bail over assault on Bolt driver
A Kuje Magistrate Court in Abuja has granted bail in the sum of N500, 000 to Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives, following an alleged assault on Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver.
Ikwechegh, a representative from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), reportedly slapped and verbally assaulted Abuwatseya during a heated exchange on October 27, when the driver allegedly requested Ikwechegh to approach his car to collect a package.
Following the incident, Abuwatseya filed a complaint against Ikwechegh on October 28, accusing the lawmaker of assault and issuing threats.
In court yesterday, Ikwechegh faced a three-count charge related to assault and threats against Abuwatseya.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges brought by the Office of the Inspector-General of Police. His counsel promptly applied for bail, which Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’id granted.
The court set the bail amount at N500, 000 with two sureties in the same sum.
Magistrate Sai’id stipulated that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and that recent utility bills must be submitted as proof of residence.
The court adjourned the case for further hearing on November 8, 2024.
