Court remands woman over alleged explicit videos on Facebook

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of a woman, Ogechi Njaka, at the Suleja Correctional Centre over allegations that she posted pornographic and derogatory videos of her victims on Facebook.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik gave the order on Monday after Njaka pleaded not guilty to a five-count charge filed by the Inspector-General of Police.

Following her plea, the prosecution counsel, Victor Okoye, requested a date for trial. Njaka’s lawyer, Samuel Ihenseken, did not oppose the request but applied for bail on her behalf.

Justice Abdulmalik directed that the defendant be remanded and adjourned the matter to June 5 for trial and consideration of the bail application.

In the charge sheet marked FHC/ABJ/CR/02/2025, Njaka was named as the sole defendant. One of the counts alleged that between 2020 and 2025, she knowingly transmitted pornographic or indecent video content through her Facebook account, “Ogechi Okeke Njaka,” using a computer system or network.

Prosecutors claimed the materials were intended to incite public disorder or pose threats to life. The charge is said to violate Section 24(2)(a) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015 (as amended in 2024).

Another count accused her of transmitting, in 2020, a video containing false and derogatory remarks about one Hajia Maryam Shehu, while displaying her image.

The prosecution alleged that the post was meant to provoke a breakdown of law and order and threaten Shehu’s life, in violation of Section 24(1)(b) of the same law. Njaka is expected to remain in custody until the next court hearing.
