The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has commenced disciplinary proceedings against an officer captured in a viral video allegedly demanding N200,000 from a motorist along the Lagos-Benin Expressway.
The incident, which surfaced online on Friday, reportedly involved a patrol officer. The video, secretly recorded by the motorist using AI-Meta glasses, showed the officer questioning the driver over vehicle documents and alleged unpaid clearances dating back to 2018.
According to the footage, the officer claimed the outstanding payments had accumulated over the years and instructed the motorist to report to the office to retrieve his vehicle key. When the driver asked how the matter could be resolved, the officer allegedly responded, “Go and bring N200,000.”
Reacting to the incident, the Nigeria Customs Service said it had activated immediate disciplinary procedures in line with its zero-tolerance policy on misconduct.
Speaking on behalf of the Comptroller, Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone A, Comptroller G. I. Aliu, CSC Hussaini Abdullahu stated that officers found guilty of violating ethical standards would face appropriate sanctions without compromise.
The video posted on NCS official X account showed that the officer involved had been handed over to the Head of the Customs Police Unit, Zone A, for further investigation and disciplinary action.
The Customs Police Unit assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted into the matter.
The identity of the officer has, however, not been officially disclosed by the Service.
