Edo traditional ruler suspended, secretary arrested over incessant kidnapping, killings

The traditional ruler of Uwano Kingdom in Agenebode, Etsako East Local Council of Edo State, Dr George Oshiapi Egabor, has been suspended by the state governor, Monday Okpebholo, due to the ongoing issues of kidnappings and killings in his domain.

Additionally, the secretary to the traditional ruler, Chief Peter Omiogbemhi, has been arrested by the relevant authorities following a recent incident that led to the death of a palace chief, the late John Ikhamate.

Governor Okpebholo announced that the suspension is effective immediately and is indefinite.

On Monday, March 3, 2025, suspected kidnappers abducted a Catholic priest identified as Philip Ekeli and Peter Andrew, a seminarian.

The abduction took place at about 11:30 p.m. at St Peter Catholic Church in Iviukwa, near Agenebode in Etsako East Local Council.

While the Catholic priest was released by the kidnappers, the seminarian was tragically killed by the abductors.
