The Nigerian military has confirmed that eight vigilantes were killed in an ambush by armed bandits in Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State on Sunday, July 6.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Major Samson Zhakom, spokesperson for Operation Safe Haven (OPSH)—the special task force responsible for security in the state—clarified that earlier media reports alleging 70 deaths were inaccurate.
“While OPSH confirms the occurrence of the event, certain details circulating are inaccurate,” the statement said.
According to the military, a group of vigilantes had mobilised from Kanam LGA to launch an operation without notifying OPSH. On arriving in the Kukawa community, where they made a temporary stop, the vigilantes reportedly clashed with local residents. During the confrontation, they allegedly attacked civilians and looted provision shops.
The statement also noted that the vigilantes seized over 20 motorcycles from residents of Kukawa, claiming the action was part of administrative procedures before proceeding to Odare Forest, their intended destination.
However, while moving toward the forest, the group was ambushed by armed bandits. Eight members of the vigilante group were killed, and several others are still unaccounted for. Their bodies have been recovered and buried. Troops from Sector 2 OPSH in Wase are continuing search-and-rescue efforts for those missing.
The military warned that independent operations conducted without proper coordination pose risks to both the vigilantes and civilians.
“While we recognise the vigilantes’ intent to protect underserved areas, independent actions without OPSH’s approval endanger both the operatives and innocent civilians,” the statement said.
OPSH reiterated its commitment to maintaining security in Plateau State and stated that it would take decisive action against any group or individual undermining its operations.
Residents were urged to support security agencies by reporting suspicious activities and providing credible intelligence.
